Instructor Development Scheme (IDS)

Instructor Development Scheme (IDS)
One year fixed-term contract (4 April 2020 – 18 April 2021), 25 hours per week
Based in Glenmore Lodge, Aviemore.

sportscotland is the national agency for sport in Scotland. Our vision is an active Scotland where everyone benefits from sport.

sportscotland Glenmore Lodge is Scotland’s National Outdoor Training Centre, where our aim is to offer world class training in outdoor adventure sports and encourage more people to enjoy the outdoors more often.

The Instructor Development Scheme (IDS) offers the opportunity of training, personal development and work experience at Glenmore Lodge, located in the heart of the Cairngorms.

The scheme supports outdoor professionals, helping to develop their careers with the following: National Governing Body (NGB) awards, personal performance in a range of activities, experience and decision-making in the outdoors, coaching and leadership knowledge/understanding, outdoor industry career awareness and developing a personal philosophy to support a career in the outdoors.

Throughout the IDS, you will have opportunities to gain experience, shadow instructors and attend courses including a broad range of NGB training/assessment courses in mountaineering, kayaking/canoeing, and mountain biking at an intermediate level e.g., MIA, Winter ML, Paddlesport Coach Award and individual discipline leadership awards.

Glenmore Lodge is operational 7 days per week so evening and weekend duties will be allocated on a rotational basis, which involves working in the stores, maintenance work in the grounds and building, and occasional work in the office including reception cover.

We are looking for six highly motivated individuals who have a variety of outdoor experience. Due to the nature of the role, you should be a team player with good communication skills. Those selected will usually have a minimum of one higher level award in their main discipline e.g. mountain (ML Summer, SPA, MIA Trg), paddlesport (Coach Award, Moderate/Advanced Leader Award) or mountain bike (L2 or 3 Leadership), ideally with an interest to obtain additional outdoor qualifications. The ability to drive and hold a driving licence is essential for the scheme; a D1(E) licence is desirable.

In accordance with the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007, placement in the scheme will be conditional on a successful applicant being able to obtain PVG membership (further details can be found here)

Your monthly salary for this post after deductions for living expenses and training course costs will be £380 per month. On average a participant on the IDS will attend between 10-20 NGB courses and up to 30 skills courses.
