Instructor Development Scheme (IDS)

Instructor Development Scheme (IDS)
Fixed-term contract, 1 March – 30 November 2020 for up to 2 seasons
Based at
sportscotland national training centre, Cumbrae, KA28 0HQ

sportscotland is the national agency for sport in Scotland. Our vision is an active Scotland where everyone benefits from sport.

The Instructor Development Scheme (IDS) offers the opportunity of training, personal development and work experience at the Scottish National Watersports Centre based on the idyllic island of Cumbrae.

The scheme supports outdoor professionals, helping to develop their careers with the following: instructor awards, personal performance in a range of activities, experience and decision-making in the outdoors, coaching and leadership knowledge/understanding, outdoor industry career awareness and developing a personal philosophy to support a career within the watersports sector.

Throughout the IDS, you will have opportunities to gain experience, shadow instructors and attend courses including a broad range of assessment courses such as Paddlesports  Instructor, Dinghy Instructor or Windsurfing Instructor. Opportunities are also provided to gain experience within the RYA cruising scheme up to Yachtmaster level. Much of Cumbrae’s work is training and assessing for Royal Yachting Association (RYA) and British Canoeing (BC) awards.

Cumbrae National Centre is operational 7 days per week so evening and weekend duties will be allocated on a rotational basis, an average of 19 hours per week, which involves working in the stores, basic maintenance, and work in the office including reception cover.

We are looking for four highly motivated individuals who have a variety of outdoor experience. Due to the nature of the role, you should be a team player with good communication skills. Those selected will usually have basic National Governing Body (NGB) awards such as a Sailing, Paddlesport or Powerboat qualification, with an interest to obtain instructor qualifications.

In accordance with the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007, placement in the scheme will be conditional on a successful applicant being able to obtain PVG membership (further details can be found here)

Your monthly salary for this post after deductions for living expenses and training course costs will be £380 per month. Whilst the number of courses you will attend is dependent on your individual circumstances, there will be many opportunities to gain experience and qualifications towards your chosen development areas.
