Hours: 30 hours per week, 4/7 days per week, which will include Wednesdays and Thursdays, and occasional weekends.

Heart of Midlothian is a Scottish Premiership Football Club based in Edinburgh with a proud history dating back to 1874. We have an exciting opportunity for a Museum & Collections Officer to join our Heritage Department. The role holder will be responsible for the management and development of our museum’s collection and archive, as well as assisting the Heritage Team with research and development for exhibitions and events. This is an excellent opportunity for candidates looking to further their experience in Museum Collections Management.

The Club’s Heritage Department, which operates from Tynecastle Park, aims to inspire and encourage people to learn about and enjoy the heritage of Heart of Midlothian Football Club. Whilst, fostering pride and engagement in the local community through the Club’s Museum collections at exhibitions, events and education throughout the stadium. Our Museum collections include social historical objects, material culture objects, archives, photographs, and records on other media. Our dedicated Heritage Team are also responsible for managing the Club’s Museum and Collections, stadium tours, historical research, outreach, Hearts Memorial Garden and Maroon Mile Project, which is funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. This is an extremely exciting time to join our team.

Key Responsibilities:

Update and evolve the collections management database within Axiell Collections; ensuring Hearts Heritage policies and general best practice are adhered to.

Utilise Axiell Collections to undertake data entry; check, develop and improve object metadata to the highest standards.

Assist with a full audit of the current collections store, carrying out conditions assessment, re-packaging, and labelling objects and items as required.

Manage the Heritage Departments approach to storage at Tynecastle Park and at Jenners Depository to ensure the security and safety of the collections.

Liaise with the Museum Manager to implement the Collections Development Policy and lead on processing acquisitions and disposals through documented procedures.

Support the Museum Manager with:

  • Collections enquiries, including offers of sale and donation.
  • Research requests, including exhibitions support
  • Assisting visitors, students, supporters and volunteers consulting the collections and archives for research

Play an active role in the ongoing digitisation programme, digitising key paper records and images for the collection.

Any other ad hoc duties relating to events and programmes, as required by the Head of Heritage.

Essential Requirements: 

Experience and knowledge of Museum Collections Management software.

A degree in a relevant subject or an appropriate professional qualification, or previous experience of comparable heritage sector work.

An understanding of working to collections management policies and procedures to the standards appropriate to an accredited museum.

A sound understanding of collections care, including appropriate storage, environmental monitoring and pest management procedures.

Able to evidence Legal Right to Work in the UK.

Essential Abilities, Knowledge, and Skills:

  • Excellent organisational skills and an ability to self-manage workloads and deadlines.
  • Excellent oral and written communications and a mutually supportive and collaborative team working style.
  • Knowledge of best practice in retrieving and handling objects, carrying out movements and re-location.
  • Knowledge of collection auditing, digitisation and digital preservation.
  • Experience with social media platforms such as X, Facebook and Instagram.
  • An interest in football, and or sporting heritage.
  • A working knowledge of MS Office 365, including Word and Excel.
  • A working knowledge of Axiell Collections is desirable but not essential.
