Girls Academy Physiotherapist: Motherwell FC

Reports To: Academy Manager / Head of Medical Services

Hours: Flexible - training evenings and match days, with additional hours as required

Location: Academy training facilities and match venues (home and away)

Role Type: Part-time

Role purpose

To provide high-quality physiotherapy support to players within the Girls Academy, assisting in the prevention, assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries. The role covers both training sessions and match days, ensuring players receive appropriate medical care and support to maximise their health, wellbeing and safe participation in football.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide pitch-side first aid and immediate injury assessment and management at training sessions and match days.

  • Assess, treat and manage musculoskeletal injuries within the appropriate scope of practice.

  • Develop and implement individual rehabilitation programmes in collaboration with the coaching and medical team.

  • Monitor player progress and provide appropriate updates to the Academy Manager and relevant coaching staff.

  • Advise on return-to-training and return-to-play progression following injury.

  • Support injury-prevention strategies, including screening, warm-up programmes and player education.

  • Maintain accurate, confidential and up-to-date medical and treatment records.

  • Liaise with parents/carers and external healthcare professionals where appropriate and in line with consent and confidentiality requirements.

  • Ensure medical and first-aid equipment is prepared, maintained and available for training and match days.

  • Contribute positively to the overall welfare, wellbeing and development of Academy players.

Person specification

Essential

  • Recognised qualification in Physiotherapy and current HCPC registration.

  • Appropriate professional indemnity insurance and professional body membership where required.

  • Experience of assessing, treating and rehabilitating sports-related injuries.

  • Strong knowledge of injury prevention, rehabilitation and return-to-play principles.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, particularly when working with young players and parents/carers.

  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary Academy team.

  • Professional, reliable, organised and able to maintain confidentiality.

  • Flexibility to attend evening training sessions and weekend match days.

Desirable

  • Experience within youth, academy or women's/girls' football.

  • Current sports first-aid or football-specific emergency care qualification.

  • Experience working with female athletes and adolescent players.

  • Additional relevant qualifications in sports rehabilitation, sports massage or strength and conditioning.

Safeguarding and compliance

  • Work in accordance with the club's safeguarding, child wellbeing and medical policies and procedures.

  • Undertake appropriate PVG Scheme membership/checks and safeguarding training as required for the role.

  • Maintain confidentiality and comply with UK GDPR and club data-protection requirements.

  • Recognise and report safeguarding or welfare concerns through the club's agreed reporting procedures.

  • Promote a safe, positive, inclusive and player-centred environment at all times.
