About Morton in the Community
Morton in the Community (MitC) is a community organisation working across Inverclyde, delivering projects and activities across Sport, Education, Employability and Health.
Our work supports people of all ages and backgrounds, working alongside schools, community organisations, funders and partners to create opportunities and make a positive difference across Inverclyde.
While our connection with Greenock Morton Football Club gives us a unique platform within the community, our work extends far beyond football.
The Role
We are looking for an experienced and highly organised Project Manager to oversee and coordinate a portfolio of projects across Morton in the Community.
This is a management and coordination role rather than a football coaching position. You do not need a coaching qualification or an in-depth knowledge of football. What matters is your ability to manage projects, people, budgets, deadlines and competing priorities effectively.
The successful candidate will be someone who naturally keeps track of the detail. You will know where projects stand, what needs to happen next, which deadlines are approaching, how budgets are performing and whether agreed actions are being completed.
Reporting to the Chief Executive, you will work closely with project staff to ensure programmes are well planned, appropriately resourced and delivered in line with agreed objectives, budgets and funding commitments.
The role will also provide a key link between frontline project delivery and the Chief Executive, providing clear and accurate information on progress, performance, risks and priorities.
Key Responsibilities
Project Management and Delivery
Manage and coordinate a portfolio of MitC projects, ensuring each is effectively planned, delivered, monitored and evaluated.
Maintain a clear and up-to-date overview of the status and progress of projects.
Develop and maintain project plans, timelines, milestones, actions and key performance indicators.
Ensure project deadlines, outputs and funding commitments are understood and achieved.
Identify potential delays, risks or delivery issues early and take appropriate action.
Coordinate activity where projects share staff, resources, partners or delivery requirements.
Support the mobilisation and implementation of new projects.
Regularly review existing projects and identify opportunities to improve how they are managed and delivered.
People Management
Provide effective line management and day-to-day support to allocated project staff.
Set clear expectations, priorities and responsibilities.
Hold regular one-to-one and project meetings and ensure agreed actions are followed through.
Coordinate staff workloads and resources across projects.
Support staff to resolve delivery issues and maintain high standards.
Identify training and development needs and support colleagues in their professional development.
Promote good communication and collaboration across the MITC team.
Budget Management
Monitor project budgets and expenditure, ensuring projects remain within agreed financial parameters.
Maintain an accurate understanding of the financial position of allocated projects.
Identify potential overspends, underspends and financial risks at an early stage.
Work with the Chief Executive and finance support on budget monitoring, forecasting and reporting.
Ensure expenditure is consistent with relevant funding agreements and grant conditions.
Consider available budgets and resources when planning staffing and project activity.
Monitoring, Evaluation and Reporting
Monitor project performance against agreed KPIs, outputs and outcomes.
Ensure project teams maintain accurate records and capture required data.
Maintain appropriate evidence to support funder requirements and reporting.
Coordinate and contribute to project evaluations.
Prepare clear and accurate project updates and reports for the Chief Executive, Board, funders and partners as required.
Maintain a schedule of reporting requirements and ensure deadlines are met.
Use project information and learning to identify improvements and inform future activity.
Partnerships and Communication
Develop and maintain positive relationships with project partners, funders and other stakeholders.
Act as a key operational contact for relevant projects and partnerships.
Attend and contribute to meetings with external partners as required.
Ensure actions arising from partnership meetings are recorded, allocated and completed.
Represent Morton in the Community professionally and positively.
Work collaboratively with colleagues across MITC to ensure information is shared effectively.
Organisation and Systems
Develop and maintain effective systems for tracking multiple projects, actions, deadlines and budgets.
Maintain accurate and accessible project documentation and records.
Establish consistent project management processes and templates where appropriate.
Identify opportunities to improve internal processes and ways of working.
Ensure project information is organised appropriately and available when required.
Provide the Chief Executive with regular, concise updates highlighting progress, upcoming priorities, risks and decisions required.
Person Specification
Essential Experience and Skills
A minimum of five years' relevant professional experience within project management, account management, office management, operations management or a similar role.
Demonstrable experience of managing multiple projects, accounts or workstreams simultaneously.
Excellent organisational and prioritisation skills, with the ability to keep track of multiple deadlines and competing demands.
Experience of coordinating and/or managing staff and workloads.
Experience of monitoring budgets and expenditure.
Experience of setting actions, tracking progress and ensuring work is followed through to completion.
Strong administrative and digital skills, including confidence working with spreadsheets and project information.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Experience of producing professional reports, updates or management information.
Ability to build effective relationships with colleagues, partners and other stakeholders.
Ability to work independently, use initiative and identify problems before they escalate.
Qualifications
A degree is not essential for this role. Relevant professional experience and demonstrable capability will be given significant consideration alongside formal qualifications.
A qualification in Business, Business Administration, Management, Marketing, Project Management or a related subject would be desirable.
Desirable Experience
Experience within a charity, community organisation or third-sector environment.
Experience of managing grant-funded or publicly funded projects.
Experience of working with funding agreements and reporting requirements.
Experience of working with schools, public-sector organisations, funders or community partners.
Experience within sport, education, employability, health or community development.
Experience of supporting funding applications or developing new project proposals.
About You
You will be someone who enjoys making things happen and bringing structure to a busy working environment.
You will be comfortable having several projects moving at once and able to move between the bigger picture and the detail. You will be confident asking where something stands, following up outstanding actions and challenging delays, when necessary, while maintaining positive working relationships with colleagues.
You will be proactive, dependable and solutions-focused, with the judgement to know when to resolve something yourself and when an issue needs to be escalated.
Most importantly, you will care about delivering projects properly and about the difference that well-run community programmes can make.
Football Experience
You do not need to be a football expert to work for Morton in the Community.
No football coaching qualification is required, and applicants do not need previous experience working within football.
Experience of football or sport may be useful, but we are equally interested in experienced project managers, account managers, office managers and similar professionals from other sectors who can bring strong organisation, people management and project management skills to MITC.
What Success Looks Like
The Project Manager will ensure that MITC has a clear and accurate picture of its projects at all times.
Projects will have clear plans, responsibilities and deadlines. Staff will understand what they are responsible for. Budgets and funding commitments will be actively monitored. Reporting requirements will be planned for and met on time. Risks and delays will be identified early, and agreed actions will be followed through.
Ultimately, the role exists to make sure good ideas become well-managed projects and well-managed projects deliver meaningful outcomes for the communities MitC serves.
