We have for many years been amongst the best rugby schools in the West of Scotland and one of the top schools for the Sport in the country. At the heart of our site lies our £8 million sports complex. Within this facility is a state-of-the-art fitness suite used for strength and conditioning as well as ample areas for indoor training. At Millerston, a short drive from the main College site (pupils are transported by coaches) lie our playing fields. Superbly maintained with an excellent clubhouse, they are first-rate playing facilities.

The Opportunity
This is an exciting and challenging role to lead and shape the development of rugby within a school already highly ranked for its achievements. St Aloysius’ College has been involved with the Scottish Schools Cup since its’ inception and our teams have played in the Scottish Cup finals at Murrayfield twice in the last five years. Our U16 team were champions in 2017 and our First XV were runners-up in 2019. We seek a colleague for the immensely fulfilling and challenging role of continuing to build on these achievements and take rugby forward as an inclusive and crucial part of the College sporting life. You will shape the new rugby development plan by having the opportunity to advise on how we can offer the very best provision possible including the provision of a rugby Summer camp. How you will make an impact
The Director of Rugby enjoys real autonomy to build and develop the existing strengths and achievements of rugby at the College and ensure the success and engagement with the sport at all levels. You will shape a team of coaches and other staff who have a passion and belief in the values and developmental benefits of the sport.
What you need to succeed
You will have a coaching level 3 (UKCC) or equivalent, with experience of coaching rugby to children aged 9-18 years and will have the ability to motivate and inspire others to deliver. Strategic planning and organisational skills are essential, as is the ability to communicate at all levels with internal and external stakeholders.

Director of Rugby
Reporting to: Head of PE and Sport
Job Purpose
- To develop a positive culture and ethos within the rugby program instilling the College values
- To develop and build on the existing strengths and achievements of rugby at the College and shape and develop a team of coaches to enhance the quality of training, performance and success in the Junior and Senior Schools.
- To lead and manage all aspects of rugby across all key stages in the College on a journey of continuous improvement.
- The post-holder is expected to uphold and actively promote the ethos of rugby at St Aloysius College and to develop all facets of the sport.
- The post-holder is expected to promote active participation in rugby to pupils at the College’ in a positive, safe and healthy manner.
- To report to the Head Teacher when necessary, but will be operationally line managed by the Head of PE and Sport, and will be responsible for the development and updating of the school’s Rugby Development Plan, securing and sustaining the highest standards of consistent coaching.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
Strategic development
- Develop, implement, and review a 1, 3 and 5-year development plan for rugby as part of the College’s on-going school improvement plan. The plan must be completed in the summer term which is confirmed by the Rugby Executive Board and presented using the College development plan format. The plan must contain an annual development plan.
- To ensure that the 3-year and annual action plan is understood, properly disseminated to all levels and translated into practical action.
- To ensure that the 3-year development plan for Rugby is monitored, evaluated and reviewed in line with other College development plans.
- To agree a rugby budget with the representative of the governing body, the Head Teacher, and the Head of Physical Education and Sport (Rugby Executive Board) on an annual basis and to work within that budget.
- To report formally with a written report in December, April, and June to the Rugby Executive Board on rugby matters and make recommendations on improvements and investments.
- Organise and chair each half term, meeting of all rugby coaches to review the annual development plan.
Professional Development
- To ensure that all coaches are appropriately qualified, trained to coach and can referee on request.
- To lead, manage, maintain and promote professional development of the coaches.
- To audit the skills of coaches on an annual basis by no later than 30th August.
- Health and Safety & Safeguarding
- Ensure that staff and pupils are well informed and well trained in all matters relating to health & safety in training and in play.
- Ensure that adherence to College safeguarding policies and procedures is exemplary and liaise with the Safeguarding Officer over any safeguarding matters.
- Ensure that rugby maintains the highest standards of health, safety, welfare and respect for the game within the ethos and values of St Aloysius’ College.
- Ensure that the concussion register is maintained.
- Ensure that First Aid equipment is maintained and appropriate First Aid provision is sourced for all home fixtures.
- Ensure the management and maintenance of rugby equipment in consultation with the Head of PE and Sports.
Coaching
- To champion the core values of rugby across the college.
- To develop and implement a coordinated coaching programme that reflects the College’s as agreed by the Rugby Executive Board playing philosophy at all age groups.
- To direct the recruitment, retention and development of players, coaches, support teams and volunteers across the player pathway
- Be familiar with and implement all rugby administrative procedures regarding player registration, eligibility and match day reporting through SCRUMS and parental engagement.
- To establish the long-term retention, development and transition programme from U11 to Senior rugby with GHA, Glasgow Hawks, Allan Glens and The West of Scotland Rugby Club.
- To coordinate the rugby academy within St Aloysius’ College.
- To establish the rugby’s outreach programme within St Aloysius’ Junior School and our feeder junior schools.
- Co-ordinate team training, strength and conditioning. In particular, the production of 1/3/5-year improvement plans inclusive of weekly training plans.
- Plan annual Pre-season training, organising and ensuring that teams are as ready as practically possible before the season begins for all year groups.
- Create and implement progressive training plan from P4 through to S6.
- Attendance at all training sessions.
- Coach a designated team as directed by the Rugby Executive Board.
- Dealing with matters relating to discipline and behaviour at fixtures and training.
- To ensure that all teams have a designated coach.
Communication
- Encouragement and promote interest in rugby and its profile in the school and the wider community.
- Advising the Head Teacher and Head of Physical Education and Sport on the staffing, resourcing and provision of support for the continuing success of the College’s rugby programme.
- Plan and organise rugby tours in the UK, Europe or internationally.
- Maintain whole school rugby PR and marketing including the College webpage and other platforms used by the College.
- Regular and timely communication with parents via email and parent portal.
- To be responsible for resources, including the recruitment of coaches, purchase of any necessary kit and equipment, and the booking of training facilities. This will involve working with the Head of Physical Education and Sport. We would expect you to utilise your contacts to identify the best coaches to deliver a sector leading programme.
- To make available weekend results for the Tuesday whole College assembly
- To organise and lead a rugby parents information evening bi-annually.
- To organise along with the Director of Hockey and Head of Football, develop and attend the annual Sports Awards.
- Out of season activities
- Organise the pre-season training programme.
- Organise a summer rugby camp designed to generate income for rugby.
- Any other reasonable requests by the Head Teacher.
Knowledge/Qualifications/Experience
Essential
- A coaching qualification to Level 3 (UKCC) or its equivalent (or the willingness and ability to achieve this with 12 months of starting the role).
- Experience of successful coaching rugby to children aged 9-18 years.
- Well-organised with exceptional time management skills and the ability to prioritise a varied and demanding workload.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; ability to establish good links with pupils, parents, colleagues and other stakeholders.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Strategic planning and organisational skills to support pupils at all levels.
- Understand Health and Safety and Child Protection legislation within education and sport.
- Ability to differentiate and personalise the coaching experience for all pupils.
- Competent user of IT (Microsoft Outlook, Excel).
- Excellent observation and analysis skills to assess and evaluate pupil performance, and record, document and share key information with pupils, parents, coaches and colleagues.
- The ability to motivate and inspire others to deliver.
Desirable
- Experience of coaching rugby to a high standard at Senior level.
- Experience of working in an Independent School.

This post is open both to qualified teachers and gifted coaches capable of sustaining and developing the programme. The Director of Rugby works at games with all year groups and would also lead on strength and conditioning work and training programmes.
