Head Coach Peebles RFC

Job Purpose

To coach Peebles 1st XV and implement a coaching strategy at Peebles Rugby Club that enables players to fulfil their potential and leads to the Club achieving promotion to the 1st Division of Scottish Rugby.

The Club has a thriving youth section and a strong connection with Peebles High School to the point that together we can field two teams at two age groups. All playing groups have had very successful seasons. Over the next few years these players will come through into the senior squad and the Club’s objective is to maximise the opportunity that this presents to grow the game in Peebles and achieve promotion.

Skills and Experience:


  • A career in rugby with a track record of coaching or playing experience, ambition and formal coaching qualifications (or working towards such)
  • Strong personal qualities such as commitment, work ethic, adaptability; honesty, integrity and consistency
  • The ability to critically assess and address needs and skill requirements in the coaching teams
  • Well-developed analytical skills with the ability to clearly communicate technical knowledge that improves individual and team performance
  • Experience of selection and team management issues and good communication skills with players, both inside and outside the matchday squad.


  • Experience of/willingness to develop younger players stepping up to the 1st XV squad.
  • The ability to direct other coaches and foster a positive and supportive working environment down into the Colts’ squad.
  • Experience of /willingness to operate with a smaller squad while developing ‘Reds’ and upcoming Colt players who have the desire to step up to 1st XV rugby
  • A ‘hands-on’ approach to training

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Lead weekly senior training and match days (Tues/Thu/Sat) and drive a culture of self-assessment that demands high performance from players and support staff towards the target of promotion
  2. Implement a playing strategy and provide technical support for this objective
  3. To identify strengths and weaknesses in individual players and devise strategies to improve individual and team performance.
  4. To communicate clearly and transparently with players and support staff, but also with the Board, Director of Rugby, supporters and the media
  5. To be able to work under pressure and make decisions based on a mixture of analysis, experience and judgement.
  6. To coach and oversee Peebles RFC involvement in the Border League and Kings of the 7s series.
