Glasgow Tigers Academy and Flag Football
Glasgow Tigers Academy (GTA) is a grassroots, volunteer-led American football programme that provides pathways for young people to enter into and progress in American football and flag football.
Our flag football programme provides routes into competitive play and national programmes (Scotland and GB). Flag football is a growing sport once again in Scotland, and will see a greater profile in years to come, featuring for the first time in the LA28 Olympics.
The role
- The Head Coach is responsible for ensuring that young people are supported to develop within the sport, the planning and delivery of practices in keeping with the competition cycle and leading a team of coaches.
- The GTA flag programme consists of:
- Under-11, Under-14 and Under-17 flag teams
- 30 flag practices (including in-house gamedays) on Saturday mornings
- Friendlies with other teams
- Scottish Flag Football (SCOFF) Winter League (10th Jan 2026)
- British American Football Association (BAFA) Youth Flag Football League (10-12 games over an estimated 6-8 gamedays, Apr-Sep 2026)
- Fully funded coach qualifications, BAFA membership and insurance
- Access to coach development training, courses and mentoring
- We are looking for at least one season's commitment to the role. Applicants must be 18 years or older. All coaching roles are voluntary.
Requirements
The Head Coach must:
- Currently hold, or attain within 3 months, the recognised minimum level within the sport of American football in the UK. At time of writing this consists of a Flag Leaders Award or British American Football Coaches Association (BAFCA) Level 1 qualification.
- Be or become an active member of the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme and not barred from carrying out regulated work with children.
- Be physically fit to conduct a coaching session and undertake officiating duties.
- Have strong written and oral communication skills to convey appropriate messages to the team, parents, other coaches and the Academy.
- Attain and maintain required qualifications.
- Commit to your own personal development as a coach.
- Be in a position to commit to the requirements of the role
Induction, support and development
An induction into the role will be provided by the GTA Development Lead.
The Academy will pay for the registration and insurance of coaches up to Level 1 and annual coach registration fees (includes insurance). BAFCA provides an annual conference, regional clinics and online development sessions for coaches. GTA recommends coach attendance.
GTA provides opportunities to shadow other coaches and can negotiate these outwith the Academy. Internal coach CPD sessions are offered within the Academy and can be tailored to specific needs.
