Rebecca Haley

Name: Rebecca Haley

How long have you been a FFG tutor? 1 year

What do you do day to day?

I am currently in my 2nd year at the University of Stirling studying Sport Studies, Physical Education and Professional Education. I work as a sports coach with Active Schools teaching a variety of sports and also spend time coaching netball to a number of different age groups.

What sport(s) do you participate in?

I currently play netball and have previously been involved in tennis and athletics.

Do you have any female role models?

My role model is Ameliaranne Ekenasio, the Silver Ferns (New Zealand) netball captain. Despite many setbacks, she has achieved great success, motivating others through her commitment and leadership skills.

Why did you want to join the programme?

I joined Fit for Girls to help empower and inspire others. Creating opportunities and providing support for young girls to feel included when taking part in physical activity is very important to me, especially as someone studying for a possible future career which will be positively impacted through the work we do.

What have you learned so far?

Through Fit for Girls I have learned the importance of creating a supportive environment and the vital role that coaches, educators and peers have in fostering confidence in those around them. I have also witnessed the influence positive role models can have on the aspirations and motivations of young girls in sport.

What is your advice for girls who want to get involved in sport?

Don’t be afraid to try out something new or different! As long as you’re having fun that’s all that matters! Sport should be enjoyable and not feel like a chore. If you enjoy what you’re doing, you’re more likely to stay motivated and continue taking part.
