Ellen Astley
Name: Ellen Astley
How long have you been a FFG tutor? Since May 2025
What do you do day to day? I took a break from university, and I now work at Aldi. I am planning to return to the University of Strathclyde to study chemistry.
What sport(s) do you participate in? I grew up being very active and took part in lots of different sports, including swimming, netball, football, athletics and badminton. I currently do athletics and triathlon training.
Can you tell us your favourite female role model within and outwith sport? I take a lot of my inspiration from the women around me like coaches, training peers and family. My favourite female role model in sport is British elite marathon runner Phily Bowden. She has a big social media platform and uses it to document the ups and downs of her life and training. I love how honest and real she is, and I find her very relatable while being a positive role model.
Why did you want to join the programme? I wanted to join the Fit for Girls programme because of how passionate and interested I am in addressing the barriers that girls face in sport, leading to the high dropout rate. I want to give girls the opportunity to explore their love for sport whilst feeling worthy and confident.
Sport has been a constant throughout my life, and I have been blessed with so many positive experiences and connections, whilst also being very aware of the barriers that we are faced with. Joining this team will allow me to give back to sport by sharing my experiences, passion and advice to empower the next generation of girls.
What is your advice for girls who want to get involved in sport? What’s to lose? It might feel daunting at first, but the possible experiences, memories and connections it could bring are endless.
