What do you do day to day?

Having recently graduated with a First-Class Honours Degree in Sport and Fitness, I am now in full-time employment with the local council, working alongside the Housing team as a clerical assistant. Alongside this, I volunteer weekly with Active Schools as an activity leader, where I run a Girls’ Fitness Club. This role allows me to promote physical activity and encourage young women in the local area to develop a positive relationship with fitness.

Do you have any female role models?

I didn’t necessarily have a female role model until my later teenage years, although one of my very first was my mum. Her determination, drive to achieve, and commitment to always being the best version of herself have continually inspired me and played a huge role in shaping the person I am today. Later on, one of the most influential role models in my life was a PE teacher at my high school, who had a huge impact on me. I was often referred to as a “legend” within the PE department, and that encouragement really helped to build my confidence and sparked my passion for becoming a role model to others.

A role model of mine who is more in the public eye is Amy Dowden, a dancer on Strictly Come Dancing. I admire Amy not only for her incredible talent as a dancer but also for her determination and drive in life. Her resilience and positivity are qualities that continue to inspire and motivate me on a daily basis.

Why did you want to be a FFG tutor?

When I came across the FFG programme, I knew it was the perfect opportunity to make a difference in the Sport and Fitness industry. My passion for working with women in sport and fitness began during my university studies, where I was the only woman on my course. This experience motivated me to develop a real drive for shaping change within the industry, so that more women and girls feel empowered to pursue a career in the sport and fitness sector.

What is your advice for girls who want to get involved in sport?

My advice for any girl who wants to get involved in sport and fitness is just GO FOR IT! It might feel daunting at first, and sometimes you may even be the only girl in the room — but take it from someone who has been there - you are more than capable. No matter the outcome, you’ll feel proud of yourself for stepping out of your comfort zone and giving it a try. Some of my best memories and friendships have come through sport, and I’m confident that others will find the same joy, confidence, and sense of belonging when they get involved.
