Context
Age in Scotland
Physical activity
We get less active as we get older
Fewer older adults meet physical activity recommendations.
Children's physical activity levels decreases between the ages of 13-15.
Sport
Primary aged children are most likely to take part in sport
Primary aged children are the most likely to take part in sport. 2-4 year olds are the least likely to take part. Girls participation drops faster at ages 13-15. Note: The sport questions for adults and children are different. We can’t compare this with the adult data below.
We are less likely to do sport as we get older. Only about a third of those over 60 take part in sport, compared to two thirds of 16-34 year olds.
Participation in our key programmes
Our programmes mainly benefit young people
Participation in our programmes drops off sharply with age. There are few supported high performance athletes over 35 years old. There is a more gradual but consistent decline in club membership between 24 and 74.
