Better conversations

We aren't always confident talking about equality, diversity and inclusion

To change things we need to have more and better conversations. It's okay if you don't feel confident on how to do this, what words to use, or what questions to ask. We can all learn and build up our understanding of people's lived experiences.

Top Tips

Language changes: Language changes, and reflects the world around us. You can be responsive to this and be part of an inclusive environment.

Keep up to date: It's important to understand the meaning behind the terms we use to address people and to keep updated and willing to refresh our language so we use appropriate and respectful terms.

Just ask: People have their own preferences about how they describe themselves, and how they want to be described. Identity is extremely personal. We can listen, educate ourselves and learn. If in doubt, just politely ask about preferences.

Start small: Think about one of the projects or programmes you are working on. Have a conversation with one of your colleagues about equality, diversity and inclusion.
