What sport are you involved in and what is it that you love about it?

My sport is wheelchair tennis which I play recreationally.  I love wheelchair tennis because you can play it with everyone and it’s a very inclusive sport.  I used to swim competitively when I was younger and enjoy swimming to keep fit.

What motivated you to be part of the Young People’s Sport Panel?

I wanted to be part of the YPSP because I want to use my voice and passion to give back to sport.  Sport has given me more opportunities than I ever thought possible.  I believe everyone should be able to take part in sport.  I want to be able to create opportunities for other young people to experience sport in the ways that I have.  I am determined to make a difference to the sporting world.

What do you think are (some of) the big challenges facing young people in Scotland today?

I am very passionate about inclusion within sport and I believe the lack of inclusion is still a big challenge that many young people with a disability still face within Scotland.  From my experience as a young person with a disability, I know there is still lots to be done to improve the number of opportunities for individuals to take part in disability sport.  I believe by raising the profile of disability sport and educating others on inclusion, inclusion within sport will continue to grow.

How do you think sport can help support young people in Scotland?

I believe there are so many different benefits to taking part in sport.  Sport can offer young people a sense of belonging, increased confidence, social connections and friendships, all of which contribute to sport supporting an individual’s mental health.  Furthermore, sport can open so many different doors for young people.

Is there a role model who inspires you? What is it about them that you admire?

My role model, who also happens to be a friend of mine, is Laura Pilkington.  Laura is one of the most hardworking, determined, and positive people I know.  I admire how she strives to make sport more inclusive and is passionate about changing sport for the better.  She genuinely wants to make a difference to the world, and I believe she will continue to do this in the future.
