sportscotland Glenmore Lodge is now accepting applications for Scottish Avalanche Information Service (SAIS) Duty Forecasters. The pay rate for Observers is £21.78 per hour and £23.50 for Forecasters.

SAIS Observers must be able to understand snowpack stability in the Scottish snowpack, have knowledge of crystal types and snow grain development, and be able to carry out high-standard snow profile observations using internationally recognised methods. Observers must also have completed the SAIS Avalanche Forecaster Training Programme, and have logged 60-100 snow profiles, 60 avalanche hazard evaluations, and passed both a field assessment and an assessment of Avalanche Report compilation.

SAIS Forecasters must have a thorough understanding of factors influencing snowpack stability in the Scottish snowpack, knowledge of crystal types and snow grain development, and the ability to conduct high-standard snow profile observations using internationally recognised methods. Candidates must also understand weather forecast implications on snowpack stability and avalanche hazard forecasting. Forecasters must have achieved the SAIS Observer Standard, independently logging 50 additional snow profiles and 50 avalanche hazard evaluations beyond the observer level.
