sportscotland Glenmore Lodge is Scotland's National Outdoor Training Centre, where our aim is to offer world-class training in outdoor adventure sports and encourage more people to enjoy the outdoors more often.
Applications are now open for the Instructor Development Scheme 2027-28.
The Instructor Development Scheme (IDS) is a one-year programme designed to support motivated outdoor leaders and instructors in taking the next step in their careers through training, qualifications, practical experience and mentorship.
All IDS participants will have the opportunity to experience a year of training, personal development, work experience at Glenmore Lodge, sportscotland's National Outdoor Training Centre, and a two-week work placement at Outward Bound Loch Eil Centre.
We're offering an exciting opportunity for four motivated individuals to develop their skills, knowledge and experience as outdoor instructors. We provide opportunities to gain advanced qualifications through a tailored and mentored development programme, alongside peer learning, coaching and instructional placements, work experience and personal development opportunities.
This is a one-year programme for those with suitable experience who are interested in developing a career as an outdoor instructor.
The minimum qualifications we are looking for in our April 2027 intake are Summer Mountain Leader Assessment, Rock Climbing Instructor and BC Paddlesport Instructor & Leader.
You will spend 20 hours per week supporting the operation of the Centre. Additional paid instructional opportunities may also be available throughout the year. Your remaining time will consist of programmed training, personal development, self-directed learning and qualification courses.
In return for this development opportunity, successful candidates will contribute to the operation of the Centre through a combination of evening reception, overnight duty and centre support responsibilities.
In accordance with the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007, placement in the Scheme will be conditional on a successful applicant being able to obtain PVG membership.
As part of the Scheme, participants are paid the Real Living Wage (currently £13.45 per hour) for the 20-hour weekly operational duties and receive an on-call allowance of £800 per annum.
Participants will also have the opportunity to work on the Schools and Summer Programme under a separate casual Centre Instructor contract, currently paid at £18.45 per hour.
As this is a residential programme, accommodation is provided in the IDS staff house. A monthly accommodation charge (currently £285) will be deducted from salary.
