Overview:
An exciting position has become available within our Sports Science department to head up our performance sector at our football club.
The Head of Sports Science will lead the design, implementation, and management of evidence-based performance programmes to optimise player physical development, reduce injury risk, and enhance on-pitch performance. This role is central to integrating cutting-edge sports science into the daily training environment and matchday preparations, working closely with coaching, medical, and performance staff.

Key Responsibilities:
Leadership & Strategy
- Develop and lead the club’s sports science philosophy in alignment with the footballing vision.
- Oversee the daily operations of the sports science department across first team.
- Collaborate with medical and coaching staff to integrate physical data into individualised player plans.
Performance Monitoring
- Manage GPS, heart rate, wellness, and other performance monitoring systems.
- Analyse training and match data to inform physical loading and recovery protocols.
- Lead on return-to-play protocols and performance benchmarking following injury.
Data & Analytics
- Interpret and report key performance indicators to coaching staff and senior leadership.
- Develop dashboards and performance profiles to track longitudinal athlete development.
- Stay abreast of latest technologies, methodologies, and research in sports performance.
Player Development
- Design and deliver individualised conditioning programs.
- Conduct regular physical assessments (e.g., fitness tests, movement screens).
- Provide actionable feedback to players to support physical improvements.
Collaboration & Communication
- Act as a key liaison between the sports science team and technical/coaching staff.
- Present findings and recommendations in a clear, concise manner to players and coaches.
- Contribute to multi-disciplinary case discussions to support holistic player care.
Essential Requirements:
- Degree in Sports Science, Exercise Physiology, or related field.
- Minimum 3 years of experience in elite/professional football or high-performance sport.
- Proven leadership experience managing a sports science or performance department.
- Strong knowledge of GPS, athlete management systems, and data interpretation.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- High attention to detail, strong work ethic, and a proactive mindset.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Masters degree in Sports Science (or higher)
- BASES accreditation or CSCS certification.
- Experience working with youth development programs.
- UEFA Coaching License (or equivalent) is a plus.
- Knowledge of software such as Catapult, STATSports, Kitman Labs, or Smartabase.
Working Conditions: - Irregular weekday and weekend work aligned with team training and match schedules.
- Travel with the team for away fixtures and training camps as required.
- Exposure to high-pressure performance environments.
