Head Coach and Assistant Coach positions for Glasgow University Men's and Women's Hockey Club 1st Teams

Responsible to: Glasgow University Men's and Women's Hockey Club Committee / Performance Sport Manager UofG Sport

Remuneration

Head Coach: £4500-£6500 on a self-employed basis dependent on availability for training and matches

Assistant Coach: £2500-3000 per season on a self-employed basis dependent on availability for training and matches

Role Duration: Pre-season and season 25/26 (August '25-May '26)

Place of work: Various venues in Glasgow as required and 'away' match attendance

Hours: 4-12 Hours per week during the season dependent on availability

Role Specifications

Glasgow University Men's and Women's clubs are committed to providing an inclusive and welcoming environment for student hockey players from international performance level to recreational and beginner level hockey.

These roles will focus on the 1st Teams for both the Men's and Women's clubs where the short to medium term goal is to provide a suitable environment for U21 and Senior international hockey players to develop and compete alongside studying world class degree programmes at University of Glasgow.

The Women's Club are currently competing in the top half of the Scottish Hockey Women's Premiership and and the men are vying for a promotion to the Men's Premiership. Both clubs will be competing in the Scottish 1A BUCS Leagues in season 25/26. Performance teams are supported by the University with access to coached Strength and Conditioning sessions twice per week, free access to sports rehabilitation, sports psychology, sports nutrition and access to minibus transport.

Training for 1st teams and home matches are currently located at Glasgow National Hockey Centre and Balgray, Kelvinside Academy.

Training takes place on Monday and Thursday Evenings with matches at weekends. Optional BUCS fixtures are on Wednesday afternoons. For an informal conversation around the roles or to note interest please contact:

Required Certification

Required Skills

  • Excellent understanding of the technical and tactical aspects of the sport
  • Excellent inter-personal and communication skills (pref. demonstrated in high pressure environments)
  • High-level organisational skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with other coaches and associated staff
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate and develop young / inexperienced players
  • Ability to coach a range of skill levels
  • Reliability and punctuality
  • Willingness to undertake professional development

Desirable Skills

  • Knowledge of University Hockey
  • Experience in University/Youth hockey and evidenced success in developing young talent
  • Some experience in using video analysis for improving performance
  • Diversity of experience across formats, levels and cultures.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver weekly training sessions for Men's and/or Women's Performance squads as lead or assistant coach from September 2025
  • Deliver training and lead teams for matches during pre-season from mid-august 2025
  • Lead on selection of squads and team line ups for match days
  • Use video footage where available to analyse and provide developmental feedback to players
  • Programme and deliver performance level training, with development of tactical styles and set plays strategies
  • Organise and deliver a comprehensive pre-season programmes to prepare squads
  • Work proactively, and communicate effectively, with other coaches, Performance Sport Manager, Club Committee Members and support staff from UofG Sport.
  • Attend two CPD exchanges in an academic year and be willing to host coaches from other clubs as a part of a CPD programme

Additional Roles

Attend and or lead coach development meetings with other club coaches

Attend up to four Steering group meetings per annum, chaired by University Sport Development Manager and Performance Sport Manager
