Considering the long-term sustainability of a sports club is an important matter for a club committee. Sustainability does not just refer to finances and developing income streams that cover the core costs of the club. It is also about the people and places, ensuring the sustainability of the club's workforce and facility access.

Ensuring the development of a sustainable club is often one of the key challenges clubs face. Whatever the situation, it is important to consider how to best manage the sustainability of a club so that it can run effectively. There are a number of things to consider:

  • Generating income - Create income to cover costs through a number of sources
  • Workforce - succession planning for when coaches and volunteers move on
  • Facilities - working with facility providers to ensure continued access
  • Funding - how a club can identify any grant-giving programmes and other sources of funding within Scottish sport.
  • Club culture - how the club can create a positive environment for members, coaches and volunteers
  • Budgeting - ensuring the club manages finances efficiently and effectively
