Following an avalanche incident on the 19th January 2023 in which a Glenmore Lodge group were involved, a series of investigations and reviews were undertaken. Support for both staff and students affected remain a priority. Key information has been shared with all those impacted by the incident and national mountaineering organisations to support learning.
- Full internal investigation undertaken and recommendations implemented ahead of winter season 2023/2024
- Full compliance and sharing with HSE investigation, concluded March 2023 stating ‘no contraventions of H&S law have been identified in relation to the avalanche incident’.
- To support further learning from the incident, sportscotland commissioned:
- Internal audit of investigation processes compliance to HSE guidance: Investigating accidents and incidents. Concluded April 2024 with recommendations, whilst noting that the investigation had been robust. All recommendations implemented from this review.
- External Review Panel review of incident and investigation. Panel included subject experts, had full access to internal documents and conducted sixteen interviews of those involved in the incident or leading the investigation. This concluded March 2024 with additional recommendations to be implemented ahead of 24/25 season.
- Sector engagement and shared learning:
- Communication with key mountaineering sector organisations from the incident occurrence, including Scottish Mountain Safety Group organisation members and Mountain Training UK and Ireland (MTUKI) organisation members and board.
- Continued engagement with MTUKI short life working group (Established at the request of Glenmore Lodge) to create good practice principles and guidance for incident investigations and shared learning within the sector.
