Alford Academy

Since the conference, Alford Academy’s YAs have been very busy planning projects. They created a QR code for all pupils to complete within the school to gather information about wider achievements. This information will be used for the topic of discussion on the newly formed sports council in Term 3.

The YA’s wanted to develop a leadership pathway in the school starting from S1. With the help of active schools, we now have one we are piloting.

Both YA’s have completed “ I Can Lead” a 2 day leadership course run by active schools which both YA’s did over the November in-service break in their own time. This will allow them to take the lead and deliver the new pilot S1 leadership course designed by YAs and Active Schools.

This will be done as an extracurricular club. The S1s will plan and deliver a festival to the local primary alongside the guidance of the YA’s and Active Schools. The hope is this will become a yearly programme and the new P7s will have this opportunity in S1 and the New YA’s will be able to have this as a project.

The idea is to captivate the S1s and show them the fun of volunteering which can be done with active schools, leadership skills they can learn, confidence and hope the join school clubs and they can do more. The S1s who complete this course will be eligible to apply for “ I Can Lead” and be on track to becoming a YA with a voice on the sports council.

Its fantastic to see young people get so involved and try to give back to what they felt they had been missing from their experience at school and try to fill that gap- Kerry Butler
