Independent Non-Executive Director: Scottish Curling

Scottish Curling is seeking to appoint an Independent Non-Executive Director (INED) to the Board. Scottish Curling governs the sport of Curling in Scotland which has a strong history of success on the world stage with multiple World and Olympic medal success.

Independent Director Role

  • Ability to work as part of the Board, providing positive challenge
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to present clearly and logically
  • Strong understanding of corporate governance, finance, audit, and risk management
  • A proven ability to develop collaborative relationships with senior staff and board members

Selection Criteria

Scottish Curling is particularly interested in candidates with a brand, digital marketing, communications and or sponsorship background.

Key Responsibilities

The primary role of the INED is to provide independent oversight and constructive challenge on behalf of the members.

  • Support the Chair, CEO, and the Board in promoting the highest standards of leadership and governance
  • A strong desire to support Scottish Curling’s growth and demonstrable empathy with the sport’s aims and objectives
  • Provide ongoing strategic advice and direction, including supporting development and review of the strategy
  • Monitor, on behalf of the members, the performance of the company in achieving objectives and goals.
  • Monitor financial, regulatory, and risk management performance and compliance
  • Be an ambassador for the RCCC

Whilst this role is unpaid, all reasonable expenses incurred will be reimbursed. This role is for a term of three years and would commence from September 2024.

We expect the time commitment to be in the region of one day per month, which would include 8 Board meetings per year, mostly via zoom in the evening. There is also the opportunity to support one of the committees such as audit, nominations, or membership development depending on your interests.

About Scottish Curling

The Royal Caledonian Curling Club was formed in 1838, has a rich heritage and strong traditions, and is recognised across the world as the ‘mother club’ of curling. They adopted the trading name of Scottish Curling in January 2018.

We are a membership organisation supporting over 9,000 members in 500 clubs across Scotland. We employ a staff of 12 working in a hybrid manner from home and our office in Edinburgh.

As the governing body of the sport we:

  • Represent the interests of our members and clubs
  • Advocate on behalf of the sport in Scotland
  • Support growth and development of the sport from grassroots level
  • Facilitate the delivery of the Olympic and Paralympic performance targets
  • Organise national competitions
