Role Description & Background:
The Scottish Handball Association (SHA) leads the development of Handball in Scotland and is currently recruiting for a Chair to help to drive the organisation forward. The successful candidate will have an influential role in developing the overall governance of the organisation and help to create a framework that ultimately sees growth in one of Scotland’s most exciting developing sports. This is an opportunity for the right person to join a new board structure and work closely with other board members and the executive team to achieve the sport’s objectives.
Role & Person Specification:
The Chair of the SHA will ideally already have a knowledge of team sports with a general understanding of the role of Governing Bodies in contributing to national outcomes within the Scottish Government’s aims as well as a strong understanding of the role of sports clubs and the business of clubs.
- Experience as a Director, Trustee or Committee Member in either commercial, voluntary or public sector context.
- Recent experience of chairing boards or committees.
- Established reputation as a leader and strategic thinker in either commercial, voluntary (ideally sports) or public sector context.
- Significant experience of operating at a senior level in a strategic capacity.
- Sound working knowledge of the public and/or private sectors.
- Ability to build and maintain strong, transparent relationships with key stakeholders.
- Ability to support, challenge and manage a relationship with the Board Members.
- Confident at some public speaking and in representational duties.
- Availability to attend International Congresses.

Time Commitment:
- Expected commitment of at least 4 hours per week.
- To attend a minimum of 4 board meetings per year.
Expenses/Remuneration:
The post is non-remunerated although travel and meeting expenses will be reimbursed according to the SGB’s policies and procedures.
Accountability:
The Chair is accountable to the Board Members of the SHA
The Chair will work closely with, and have responsibility for the management of, the Chief Executive Officer
Main Duties:
- To lead the Board and set its agenda
- To ensure that all members of the Board receive accurate, timely and clear information, in particular around the organisation’s performance, to enable the board to take sound decisions, monitor effectively and provide advice to promote the SHA
- To ensure effective communication with the membership and ensure that the board develop an understanding of the views of the membership.
- To manage the board, attend the AGM, meetings of the board and ex officio meetings of sub-committees as appropriate.
- To lead the board in continuing to develop our induction programme for new directors and in identifying and meeting the development needs of individual directors.
- To represent the SHA at national and club events as required.
- To represent the SHA at International congresses.
- To contribute positively to the organisational development of the organisation.
- To serve on the board of the British Handball Association.
- To develop good working relationships with stakeholders and partners including sportscotland.
- To help prepare and present the Annual Report.
- To become completely familiar with the organisation’s governance documentation and board/committee procedures.
