Bursary: Full sponsorship of tuition fees for a fulltime postgraduate home research student (£4,786). Whilst International applicants are welcomed, applicants should be aware that the bursary is only to the amount of UK fees.

Through an innovative collaboration the university of Abertay and Dundee FC there is an exciting training opportunity for a practitioner/researcher within professional football. The role has two parts, one as a practitioner in elite football and the other as a researcher driving the development of novel strategies within football that will enhance the delivery of player performance. You will be expected to based within the club for most of the time under the mentorship of the head of performance. You will be working in the football performance team at Dundee FC helping support the clubs’ ambitions, it is expected that a minimum of 2 days a week will be spent working and training as a practitioner.

Typical duties may include:

  • The collection and analysis of data such as GPS, wellness and force production.
  • Assisting with the set up and delivery of aspects of on pitch training such as warmups.
  • Producing accurate and valid reports on individual areas of performance as directed by the Head of Performance.
  • Assisting with the needs of the club’s physiotherapy staff in relation to injury prevention exercises and activation work.
  • Reviewing current trends in research and providing feedback on how these may shape current practice within the club.

The research topic will be decided through collaboration between the partners but will align with the club’s key performance development requirements. It is anticipated that the research topic will be in the areas of hamstring injury, GPS data modelling and player monitoring. The research will be carried out within the setting of the club with mentorship from senior academics from Abertay University. The successful candidate will have to formally apply through the Graduate School and will need to complete a research proposal that the university deems suitable, before being admitted to the MSc by research programme. They will also need to complete the formal requirements of researcher training courses and progression milestones set by the University whilst carrying out the research.

The successful candidate will be expected to cope well within a highpressure environment, work to short deadlines and be adaptable and flexible to new situations. A minimum of 2:1 degree in a sports discipline is required.
