Categories and Criteria - Scottish Sports Awards 2025

 

Club Coach of the Year  

This award is for an outstanding coach, who has significantly increased the sporting opportunities and participation levels within their sports club, community group or community sport hub and has contributed to the skill development of the people they coach.​ ​An individual who:​​ ​ 

  • Has been an inspiration and a positive role model   ​ ​ 

  • Has delivered regular quality coaching sessions, meeting the needs of all participants 

  • Has provided inclusive opportunities by using targeted approaches to remove barriers to participation.​ ​ 

  • Has helped participants to develop their skills, build confidence and resilience, and develop a positive attitude towards sport and physical activity.​​ ​ 

  • Has adopted a person-centred approach to coaching​, taking time to understand their participant's needs and goals and helping them reach their potential. 

  • Has invested time and energy in their own development and holds a recognised SGB qualification appropriate to the level at which they coach​.  

 

 

High Performance Coach of the Year 

This award is for an outstanding coach who is representing and working with athletes and teams at the highest level of sport competing at Major Games and Championships. An individual who:    

  • Has been an inspiration and a positive role model       

  • Has coached athletes or teams who have delivered a successful performance at the most senior level of International, UK or Scottish sport    

  • Has provided inclusive opportunities, helping to remove barriers and reduce inequalities in sport      

  • Has adopted a person-centred approach to coaching, building excellent relationships with athletes and those around them    

  • Has supported and demonstrated valued performance sport behaviours within their coaching, making a difference to the performance and success of an athlete or team   

  • Has invested time and energy in their own development and holds a recognised SGB qualification appropriate to the level at which they coach 

 

Young Coach of the Year 

This award is for an outstanding coach aged 23 or younger (by 18 September 2025) working in a school, club, community group, Community Sport Hub or on behalf of a Scottish Governing Body. The recipient will have invested time in their development as a coach and have made a significant impact on the people they coach.​ ​An individual who: ​ ​ 

  • Has been an inspiration and a positive role model​ ​ 

  • Has delivered regular quality coaching sessions, meeting the needs of all participants. 

  • Has provided inclusive opportunities, helping to remove barriers and reduce inequalities in sport.​ ​ 

  • Has helped their participants to build confidence and resilience, and develop a positive attitude towards sport and physical activity      

  • Has adopted a person-centred approach to coaching, taking time to understand their participants’ needs and goals and helping them reach their potential                                

  • Has invested time and energy in their own development and is working towards or has gained a recognised SGB coaching qualification/award appropriate to the level at which they coach ​  

 

 

Janice Eaglesham Disability Coach of the Year  

This award is for an outstanding coach working with participants, athletes or teams with disabilities. An individual who:     

  • Has been an inspiration and a positive role model 

  • Has delivered regular quality coaching sessions, meeting the needs of all participants 

  • Has adopted a person-centred approach to coaching, taking time to understand their participant's needs and goals and helping them reach their potential       

  • Has provided inclusive opportunities by using targeted approaches to remove barriers to participation    

  • Has helped participants to develop their skills, build confidence and resilience, and develop a positive attitude towards sport and physical activity    

  • Has invested time and energy in their own development and holds a recognised SGB qualification appropriate to the level at which they coach 

 

 

Technical Official of the Year 

This award is for a referee, umpire or technical official who has shown outstanding dedication and commitment in their role. (We will accept a dual nomination where sports require officials to work in pairs). An individual who:    

  • Has been an inspiration and a positive role model    

  • Has regularly officiated at either local, regional, national or international level, enabling competition structures in their sport to take place    

  • Has adopted a person-centred approach to officiating, taking time to understand competitor's needs and supporting others    

  • Has invested time and energy in their own development and has gained a recognised SGB qualification appropriate to the level at which they officiate 

 

 

Volunteer of the Year  

This award is for an outstanding volunteer (in a non-coaching or officiating role). The recipient will have made a significant contribution to the development of sport in their role as a volunteer. ​ An individual who:​​ ​ 

  • Has been an inspiration and a positive role model.      ​ ​ 

  • Has provided inclusive opportunities, helping to remove barriers and reduce inequalities in sport​. ​ 

  • Has volunteered on a regular basis throughout the year  

  • Has adopted a person-centred approach to volunteering, taking time to understand people's needs and supporting others. ​ ​ 

 

Club of the Year 

This will be awarded to a community sports club who delivers an outstanding service and has made a significant contribution to sport in Scotland. The size and resource of the club will be considered when assessing the nomination and the club will be able to demonstrate their impact in at least one of the following areas:  

  • Participation  

  • Equality, diversity and inclusion  

  • People development  

  • Collaboration  

  • Performance 

  • Meeting community need 

 

 

Team of the Year  

We are looking for a Scottish team* whose achievements represent excellence in sport at the highest level. This award is open to all able bodied and para teams.  We will consider: 

  • The calibre of event (e.g. Olympics, Paralympics, Commonwealth Games, World or European Cup/Championships) or series of events (e.g. Grand Slam, World Cup Series, Grand Prix, League) 

  • The level of achievement 

  • Inspirational impact of achievement 

 

*A team for this category consists of:  

  • Two or more Scottish athletes competing for one medal/title (e.g. pairs, doubles, relay, team). 

  • All team members must be Scottish in order to be nominated  

Nominees will be judged on their contribution during the judging period of 1 August 2024 – 18 September 2025.   

 

Young Athlete of the Year

This will be awarded to a young Scottish athlete who has achieved outstanding success. We will consider: 

  • The inspirational impact of the performance 
  • The quality of the field/competition regarding the achievement 
  • The wider contribution of the individual to their sport and local communities 

Nominees will be judged on their contribution during the judging period of 1 August 2024 to 18 September 2025. Athletes should be under the age of 23 at the time of nominated performance(s). Performances at both senior and age group events are eligible. The athlete must have been eligible to represent Scotland/GB over the performance period. 

 

Athlete of the Year 

We are looking for a Scottish athlete* whose achievements represent excellence in sport at the highest level.  We will consider: 

  • The calibre of event (e.g. Olympics, Paralympics, Commonwealth Games, World or European Cup/Championships) or series of events (e.g. Grand Slam, World Cup Series, Grand Prix, League) 

  • The level of achievement  

  • Inspirational impact of achievement 

*A Scottish athlete competing as an individual i.e. singles events or as part of a team. 

Nominees will be judged on their contribution during the judging period of 1 August 2024 – 18 September 2025. 

 

 

Para Athlete of the Year 

This will be awarded to an individual para athlete alongside their guide or partner if applicable. We are looking for a Scottish para athlete* whose achievements represent excellence in sport at the highest level. We will consider: 

  • The calibre of event (e.g. Olympics, Paralympics, Commonwealth Games, World or European Cup/Championships) or series of events (e.g. Grand Slam, World Cup Series, Grand Prix, League) 

  • The level of achievement  

  • Inspirational impact of achievement 

*A Scottish para athlete competing as an individual i.e. singles events or as part of a team 

Nominees will be judged on their contribution during the judging period of 1 August 2024 – 18 September 2025.
