Q&A with Caitlin

What has been your highlight during your time as a YA?

My highlight of being a Young Ambassador is having the opportunity to coach and mentor younger pupils. By delivering in cluster primary schools and to younger years within my school I have had the chance to see those individuals develop their skills. For some that meant seeing them improve in sports like Netball, Badminton and Rounders however, for others this meant seeing an increase in confidence and social skills. The programme has given me the opportunity to make a huge impact on the lives of other young people within Fife, and that is the most rewarding outcome!

What are you most looking forward to as part of the YA Delivery Team?

I am excited to make a greater impact on the wellbeing of young people through the use of sport. The training we plan to deliver to the new Young Ambassadors will provide them with the skills and knowledge to help their own communities, which in turn will give children from all backgrounds and situations a voice, not only in their area but also on a national level.

What skills would you like to learn or develop during your time as a YA Delivery Team member?

I am looking forward to the opportunity to further improve my team-working skills. Often I go quiet in large group conversions as I find it overwhelming with so many different voices. I’d love to further learn that it’s okay to have different opinions and to voice what you believe in, as different viewpoints are a reflection of people’s personal experience. That we can all learn from each other but to do so we not only need to speak up for our beliefs but also listen to others and take on board what they’re saying.

What advice would you give to a young person considering Young Ambassadors?

The one thing I live by is just go for it! We get given so many opportunities throughout our lives and often we let them pass us by because we’re scared of what negative things could happen. However, we have to look at the flip side and think of all the positive destinations and impacts it could have on our lives. So whenever you are given an opportunity take the chance!

What is your proudest achievement (outside of Young Ambassadors)?

One of my proudest achievements is becoming captain of my school. I’ve wanted to do this since S1 as I wanted to have an influence within my school and drive change for all current and future pupils. I was recently pushed out my comfort zone and interviewed for the position and got it for the 2023-24 session! Another huge achievement of mine was logging over 400 hours on Saltire Awards in under two years.

What are your future aspirations?

I am not set on what I will do after this school year however one of my top options is going to university to become a physics teacher. I would also love to travel the world and learn about new cultures and experience how other people live. I also aspire to be a greater influence in sport and want to continue to shape young peoples lives through sports.
