The Effective Coaching Map is intended for anyone delivering sports coaching sessions. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced coach, this tool provides valuable insights to improve your coaching effectiveness.

The map serves as a self-assessment and reflection tool. It helps coaches identify their strengths, areas for growth and development. By using the map, coaches can enhance their coaching practice and positively impact their athletes.

The Effective Coaching Map consists of several interconnected elements which are grouped under the following broad headings:

  • Knowing Yourself
  • Knowing Others
  • Knowing Coaching
  • Self-Assessment: Start by assessing your coaching practices using the map. Reflect on each component and rate yourself honestly. Identify areas where you excel and areas for improvement.
  • Goal Setting: Set specific coaching goals based on your self-assessment. Prioritize areas that need development. Create an action plan to address these goals.
  • Regular Review: Revisit the map periodically (e.g., quarterly or annually). Track your progress and adjust your goals as needed. Seek feedback from peers, mentors, or athletes.

Once you have identified areas for development and set goals to support continuous improvement of your coaching practice there are numerous ways you could achieve these goals. Below are some examples:

  • Training Workshops: Attend workshops or training sessions related to the map
  • Peer Discussions: Engage in discussions with fellow coaches
  • Coach observations: observe other coaches and invite peers or mentors to observe your coaching
  • Feedback: invite feedback from peers, mentors and participants
  • Resource Exploration: Explore related resources provided by sportscotland, your sports Governing Body and other sources to broaden your coaching knowledge
