Gregor Gardner

What was your experience in sport growing up?

I started my sports journey aged 5 when I started free style wrestling. I wrestled up until I was 17.  In that time I competed at a high level. I was Scottish Champion for my age and weight three times, 1974, 1975, and 1976 and then later took up judo and for the last 27 years have been running my own club.

What is your volunteering experience to date?

My volunteering experience has been nothing but positive. I was fortunate at the beginning to have an excellent mentor.

What/who inspired you to get into volunteering?

Volunteering happened by accident. I was a member of a Judo Club where the coach had to leave the club and it was either stepping in and taking over or the club folding.

What do you enjoy most about volunteering?

What I enjoy most about volunteering, "everything". Coaching the kids, watching them progress, the increase in their confidence and having fun, also coaching seniors and those with disabilities.

What advice would you give to others looking to get involved in volunteering?

The advice I would give to anyone interested in volunteering is to take it slowly, try and relax and have an open outlook because not everyone is the same.
