What was your experience in sport growing up?

I played hockey and netball when I was at school and University.  I am of an age that there was not much more choice! I did attend a recreational swimming club but not a great love!

What is your volunteering experience to date?

I have been (and continue to be) a volunteer for many years (almost 50) with Girlguiding and held many roles. I was a volunteer venue liaison during the European Athletics championships in 2018. In 2019, I volunteered in the accreditation team for the European Indoor Championships and in 2021, I was in the ticketing team for UEFA Euros 2020 in Glasgow. I have been involved in stewarding for Glasgow Kiltwalk and MS (multiple sclerosis) walk too.

What/who inspired you to get into volunteering?

As I have said, I have been part of Girlguiding since I was young, and it was just a natural progression for me to volunteer.  I appreciated the time and effort many people put into my early development and am happy to give something back. The later volunteering was inspired by stories of volunteering adventures at Commonwealth Games.  Many friends and colleagues were involved in this and when I retired, I thought I could “give it a try”!

What do you enjoy most about volunteering?

I enjoy the challenge that each event brings.  It’s great to meet other volunteers and having opportunity to help participants. With Girlguiding, I enjoy the fun of working with other leaders and seeing the excitement that I can generate for Brownies and watching them develop and mature.

Have you had to overcome any challenges or barriers whilst volunteering?

The main one is finding time! Now I am retired, I have more time so can give a little more time to help out.

What advice would you give to others looking to get involved in volunteering?

Go for it! There are always others who will help and support you.
