Gareth Scott case study

Youth work

Gareth has been volunteering in sport for over 3 years as a coach after getting involved through his Active Schools team in Renfrewshire who have helped him develop his skills and confidence to where he is today. Through his enthusiasm in the programme and his keenness to grasp all the opportunities that came his way he now gives up his time to coach a number of clubs in his school, Johnstone High School, and local community.

This all adds up to around 8 hours a week of his own time dedicated to getting others involved in sport which is incredible for someone so young.  Talking about his commitments he says "I enjoy coaching sports that I used to play and meeting a wide range of people from primary, secondary and ASN schools.  I’ve also had the opportunity to meet elite athletes who have inspired me to help others achieve what they want to from sport.  I have developed new skills learning from more experienced coaches and then I am able to pass these skills on to others which is really rewarding".

Award winning

For his commitment Gareth was recently recognised in sportscotland’s national Coaching, Officiating and Volunteering Awards winning Young Volunteer of the Year, and we can see why!

Gareth has now been chosen to become a Young Ambassador for Johnstone High School and is leading and encouraging other young people to get involved in sport.

And it doesn’t stop there as Gareth tells us he is hoping to get into university to do a sport related degree. He says “I hope to continue being a part of the Active Schools and Young Ambassadors programmes and take the skills I have learned into my future career"
