React Basketball: Sessional Coach

POST: Sessional Coach

LENGTH: 1 year post, with extension at end of season based on performance

WEEKLY HOURS: 2-3 hours per week (with the option of more dependent on availability)

LOCATION: Renfrewshire/Inverclyde

OFFICE BASE: React Basketball, Rashielee Avenue, Erskine

RESPONSIBLE TO: Head of Youth Development

RESPONSIBLE FOR: Assistant Coaches and Squad Players


The primary purpose of React Basketball, Registered Charity SC045050, is the advancement of public participation in recreational, grass-roots basketball among children and young people. The secondary purpose is the advancement of citizenship through teaching and instilling the five REACT values, which are Respect, Enable, Achievable, Community and Togetherness.

It will be your responsibility to organise and deliver quality sessions to a variety of children/age groups across React. Each session much follow a development plan to ensure every child is gaining the correct skills to hep with their progression through basketball. Also, You must be willing to deliver value talks on various subjects as well as being comfortable talking in front of large groups at award nights, events etc.

Experience and Knowledge - Essential:

  • Can clearly articulate an understanding of the aims and outcomes of React Basketball, including our five core values
  • A comprehensive understanding of the positive benefits that arise from regular physical activity.
  • A comprehensive experience of working with children & young people, through basketball, in a primary and secondary school setting
  • A comprehensive experience of developing children and young people, through basketball, from the participatory – development – performance stages of development
  • Proven track record of project management and development
  • Knowledge and experience of fostering a positive performance based environment

Qualifications and Training - Essential:

  • Qualified in UKCC Level 1 Basketball Coaching
  • Qualified in scUK Safeguarding and Protecting Children in Sport
  • Qualified in HSE Emergency First Aid at Work, or equivalent NGB recognised course
  • Trained to Positive Coaching Scotland: Double Goal Coach level
  • A member of the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (PVG) scheme via Volunteer Scotland Disclosure Services

Desirable :

  • Educated to Diploma level, or can demonstrate excellent on-job experiences
  • Qualified in UKCC Level 2 Basketball Coaching
  • Qualified as a Child Protection, Emergency First Aid or Positive Coaching Scotland tutor
  • Trained in scUK Disability Awareness and Inclusion

Job Specific Requirements - Essential:

  • Can clearly demonstrate the ability to build effective and strong working relationships with external agencies to achieve positive results
  • Full Clean British Driver’s License, including access to transport (car)
  • Ability to prioritise tasks, meet deadlines and work on own initiative
  • Ability to be flexible around the needs and demands of the organisation, which includes daytime, evening and weekend work
  • Ability to effectively lead a diverse team of people to achieve aims/outcomes
  • Excellent time management

Desirable :

  • Ability to coordinate an inclusive and effective performance programme to squad players

Personal Requirements - Essential:

  • Strong commitment to delivering and advancing the priorities of React Basketball
  • Ability to work as a team member
  • Enthusiastic with the ability to motivate and inspire others
  • Strong influence and negotiation skills, including the ability to build a high degree of trust between the relevant partner agencies and React Basketball, among staff and between staff and members
  • Resilient with the ability to confidently and professionally deal with difficult challenges
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
